COWICHAN, B.C. - The Team Kahnawake bantam girls soccer squad won a silver medal at the 2008 North American Indigenous Games after falling 4-1 to Team British Columbia. The girls squad earned their spot in Saturday’s gold medal game by strong play in the preliminary rounds of the tournament, and only falling to B.C. on the first day of competition, 7-1. They were the only team to score on the powerhouse B.C. team.

“It feels good,” head coach Oronhiaté:ken Diabo told TeamKahnawake.com. “The girls worked hard all winter, and all spring and summer long.”
The game against B.C. was a hard fought contest and it was never out of reach for the girls from Kahnawake. Early on in the game B.C. took a two nothing lead, but the local girls never gave up. In the second half of the game B.C. took a 3-0 lead, but Kahnawake was quick to respond when Iakothahón:ni Delormier netted Kahnawake’s only goal.
“It was a really hard game,” Delormier said. “We tried our best and we made it to the gold medal game. We tried hard and we got silver.”
“I’m happy but a bit disappointed that we got silver,” Autumn Robertson said. “We should have won the gold, we had it in us to win.”
The girls have nothing to be ashamed of as they added another medal to Team Eastern Door and the North’s medal count.
“I think we did really well going against B.C.,” goaltender Summer Martin said after the game. “B.C. is hard and we played really good against them and it’s a good experience for us.”
