COWICHAN, B.C. - Both Team Eastern Door and the North lacrosse teams had a good showing today (Wednesday, August 6) as they both downed Team New York. The Juvenile squad, which is coached by former National Lacrosse League player Mike Benedict and features Kahnawa’kehró:non Kyle Alfred, Skaron Mayo, Bradley McGowan and Bradley Thomas, took a hard fought 9-7 win over New York.

Lacrosse

Early in the game the EDN team took the lead, and it looked like they were never looking back. At one point the score was 5-2 for Team EDN, but by the end of the second period the score was tied at 5-5. In the third period Team New York took a 6-5 lead.

The game started to get rough and the EDN boys took some costly penalties, which allowed the New York squad to get back in the game. With the score tied at 7-7, EDN took the lead on a spectacular goal by Tye Thompson, who got a breakaway and jumped in the air and deked the New York netminder.

Lacrosse

Shortly after that EDN took a two-goal lead, which proved to be all they needed. With about two minutes remaining in the game New York took a four-minute hitting from behind penalty, which is not what they needed. However, with just 1:45 left in the game New York coach Emmit Printup called for a stick check on one of the EDN players.

The stick turned out to be illegal and the EDN’s power play was negated. Also prior to play resuming another EDN player was thrown in the box for unsportsmanlike conduct, giving New York a 4-on-3 man advantage. New York was unable to capitalize on these costly penalties though and the EDN boys won the game, bringing their record to 1-1.

In the earlier game of the day, the Midget team played a strong game against the New York squad. The game was tied 1-1 after the first period and early in the second New York took the lead 2-1. Then at 4:38 of the second Tokwirihson Goodlead tied it up at 2-2. Eleven seconds later Jacoby Thompson gave the EDN boys a 3-2 lead.

Then at 7:50 Nick Angus netted a goal to give the Team EDN a two-goal lead. Then with less than a minute left in the second period A’én:nase Horne made it 5-2. Then at around the two-minute mark of the third period Goodleaf scored again to give his team a 6-2 lead.

The EDN team then got into some penalty trouble and New York capitalized on a 5-on-3 power play making it 6-3. That goal pumped some new life into the New York squad as they were able to score another goal making it 6-4. However, they were unable to get another one as Boose Jacobs netted the seventh and final goal for Team EDN with five minutes remaining in the game. The final was 7-4 and the win improved their record in the round-robin portion to 2-0.

Soccer

In other action, the bantam girls soccer team downed Alberta 8-1 to improve their record to 1-1.  The midget girls team played to a hard fought 2-2 tie against the North West Territories. The EDN team dominated the play for the majority of the game, but ran into a hot goaltender and they hit the post or crossbar a number of times.

Soccer

The canoeing team won another ten medals today to bring their team total to 33. In rifle shooting Bryan Deer is in fifth place after the Prone event, while his son Shakowennenhari is in fourth after the Standing event. The Senior Women’s Volleyball team took home a bronze medal and the juvenile softball team lost 12-1 to Wisconsin.
